I finished reading The Grapes of Wrath. It was good enough, but I have to say I really preferred Of Mice and Men. The start was terrible at times, he had a style where he'd do one chapter that was just narrative of life for the Okies, and would then do a chapter on the main story. Later on this works well, because the main story has much longer chapters, but at the start you get through the chapters quite quickly, and it just made the pacing seem quite off, not to mention I found the main story more interesting.

That is my main complaint. I also found it interesting how much the times have changed, because I think I was meant to accept it was fine for the mother to slap her pregnant 18 year old daughter because she was upset about her husband. Not that that's a bad thing, I just found it quite bizarre.

I didn't really consider it, but it's quite fitting I read The Grapes of Wrath after Atlas Shrugged. The authors both have very, very different views, with the books different messages and even the characters you follow are pretty much polar opposites.

I'm glad I found this article to be honest. They don't like the books, but the comparison made for a good read.
